Of eliptical form, very finely carved in high relief with a continuous mountain landscape scene, detailed with two elderly scholars playing weiqi under the shade of pine trees, beside two lady attendants and two boy servants preparing tea, the reverse of the brushpot depicting an equestrian bearing a banner and riding towards the scholars, the bamboo of a rich reddish-brown tone

The scene depicted on this brushpot is from Dong Shan Bao Jie, which tells the story of the confident prime minister, Xie-an, of the Eastern Jin dynasty (317-420) who was playing a game of weiqi when news of his army conquering the enemy reached him.
