The inscription may be translated as:
In the deep of night my dream returns with the ascending moon;
a shadowy branch moves towards me from across the wall.
The two characters Meigong ending the short text is the sobriquet of a famous literary figure and painter of late Ming dynasty, Chen Jiru (1558-1639) who originally composed the poem.
A similar hardstone inlaid zitan brushpot was sold in these Rooms, 30 October 2001, lot 534.
