A HARDSTONE EMBELLISHED HUANGHUALI BRUSHPOT
QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)

Of large cylindrical form raised on three shallow tab-feet, finely inlaid with carvings of mother-of-pearl, lapis lazuli and agate to render a scene of butterflies variously in flight above a long gnarled bough bearing prunus in various stages of bloom, the rockwork ground further detailed with a flowering plant, the reverse with a short text inlaid with metal wire, ending with two-characters Meigong

The inscription may be translated as:

In the deep of night my dream returns with the ascending moon;
a shadowy branch moves towards me from across the wall.

The two characters Meigong ending the short text is the sobriquet of a famous literary figure and painter of late Ming dynasty, Chen Jiru (1558-1639) who originally composed the poem.
