Lot Essay

This unusual copper-enamel dish is a copy of the equally finely decorated 'ruby-back' porcelain dishes of similar subject-matter. An example is illustrated by Jacques van Goidsenhoven, La Famille Rose, p. 17 and another is illustrated on the front cover of Chinese Porcelain XVIc.-XVIIIc., From the Collection of Dr. C. M. Franzero. Compare also with two dishes of this pattern, one Chinese and the other a Samson copy, from the James A. Garland and the J. Pierpont Morgan collections, sold at Sotheby's New York, 23 September 1997, lot 331.
