The strongly potted basin enamelled in vibrant tones, the exterior decorated with four shaped cartouches alternately depicting landscapes and lengthy poems with three iron-red seals, one of gourd shape reading Gu Qi, reserved against a yellow ground decorated with lotus scrolls and gilt shou characters, all between lappet and ruyi borders, the interior with carp amidst water weeds, with squirrels clinging to melon and grape vines to the sides

One of the poems tells the story of Zhu Maichen, a Han dynasty farmer, who showed great filial piety; the second poem enclosed in the other panel elucidates the story of a lone fisherman who through arduous and steadfast study went on to become a scholar-official. The poems were written between AD 620-623.
