The oviform jar finely painted in bright cobalt-blue with a wide band of intricate linked arabesque scrolls issuing feathery leaves and stylised lotus, within two narrow bands of linked panels alternating with flower-heads between diamond motifs, the trefoil border suspending foliate motifs around the waisted neck and the base encircled by a ruyi-shaped scroll dividing foliate designs
12 3/4 in. (32.4 cm.) high, box

Lot Essay

Previously sold in these Rooms, 1 October 1991, lot 838.

No other jar of this rare design appears to be published. The arabesque motif with feathery leaves is reminiscent of the Rococo-style architecture of the Qing Summer Palace, Yuanming Yuan, 'The Garden of Perfect Brightness', and it is possible that this jar was a special commission.
