James Scott (1649-1685) was Charles II's eldest illegitimate son. His mother was Lucy Walter, Charles's first mistress, to whom it is rumoured a clandestine marriage occured during European exile before the Restoration. Created Duke of Monmouth in 1663, he erroneously expected the population to support his claim to the throne on Charles's death due to the unpopularity of the future catholic James II. After landing at Lyme Regis, Dorset, in June 1685 with 4,000 troops, he was easily defeated by the King's army 2 miles away at Sedgemoor, where he was captured and beheaded.
