ARMORIAL BINDING -- Breviarium Romanum. Urbino: Hieronymus Mainardi, 1640. 8°. Title in red and black, woodcut vignette, engraved plates by Franceschi, Carolus Grandi, (2 leaves reinforced at margins, spotting). Contemporary Italian red morocco, central gilt ARMS OF HENRY STUART, CARDINAL OF YORK, on sides within a wide rococco border, spine gilt (stained, back board chipped). Provenance: Henry Stuart, Cardinal of York (1725-1807), brother of Prince Charles Edward, with pencil note 'given me by a canon in 1927' (1725-1807; binding).
Known by the Jacobites as 'Henry IX, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland', Henry Stuart was the younger brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie. He was ordained a priest in 1747 and became the bishop of Frascati but later was forced to flee to the North of Italy when his Frascati property was seized by the French. Left in poverty, he was given a life annuity by King George III. While the Hanoverians represented this as an act of charity, Jacobites believed that it was no more than a first instalment on the money which was legally owed to him by the British crown. Henry Stuart is buried with his father and brother in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome.
