Contemporary black half hardgrain morocco (rather worn). Provenance: E.B. Pusey (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of an important work describing the travels of de Vogüé and William Waddington in Syria and Palestine in 1853 and 1854 when they 'explored the area to the east of the coastal mountains, from Aleppo to Damascus, Palmyra and Basra. This area was rich in ancient monuments, and this important expedition brought a great deal of new material to light, relics of the Jewish, Christian and Moslem periods', Blackmer 1744.
