Roman, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic and Gothic type, woodcut to title and one further woodcut of the 'Arbor Cabbalistica', index and errata at end (without preliminary blank, a very few minor chips not affecting text, and small unobtrusive marginal dampstain to a few leaves). Contemporary blind-tooled vellum over paper boards, all edges blue (neat repair to lower joint, rear endpapers renewed, a little scuffing to boards). Provenance: ink library stamp to I7r.
FIRST EDITION of Hackspan's work on Caballa, in a contemporary binding. Hackspan, a German Theologian and philologist, was a student of the celebrated Calixtus, and shared many of his liberal views on religion. Proficient in the Oriental languages, Hackspan was for many years Professor of Hebrew at the University of Altdorph. A prolific writer, in the present work - the last third of which is devoted to Caballa - Hackspan deals among other things with the numerology of the Hebrew alphabet, presents the 'Arbor Cabbalistica' (on Ff3v), and makes reference to rabbinical as well as biblical sources.
