FORE-EDGE PAINTING -- [CANNING, George (and others)]. The Microcosm, a Periodical Work, by Gregory Griffin [pseud.], of the College of Eton. Windsor: C. Knight, 1788. 8°, additional engraved title (occasional inconspicuous spotting). Contemporary red morocco, flat spine with gilt urn tool in ruled compartments, gilt dentelle and floral border round sides, gilt edges (short split in upper hinge). FORE-EDGE PAINTING DEPICTING NEW YORK BAY FROM STATEN ISLAND. Provenance: William Cowper Stansfield (signature dated 1804 on an endpaper). Second edition of this interesting work, a periodical produced by the boys of Eton, including George Canning (future Foreign Secretary), J. H. Frere and Robert Percy, printed by the first press established in Windsor.
