FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS -- THOMSON, James. The Seasons. London: A. Strahan, 1788. 8°, half title, 4 engraved plates by T. Cook after Dodd (some browning and spotting). Contemporary vellum in the style of Edwards of Halifax, flat spine with title-label and gilt ornaments, gilt onlay round sides of dark and light green calf surrounding a gilt Greek key pattern border, gilt edges (spine somewhat darkened, light discolouration on sides). FORE-EDGE PAINTING of a couple fishing in a stream flowing through the grounds of a large house. Provenance: Maria Stuart Collins (near contemporary signature at head of title); T. Desbrisay (signature at head of a mutilated bookplate); W.H. Corfield (bookplate).
With another 3 works, Hanson's "Edwards of Halifax" ([no place or printer], 1912), Rogers' The Pleasures of Memory, with Other Poems, (London, 1799) in contemporary Etruscan panelled tree calf gilt binding with a FORE-EDGE PAINTING depicting a three-spanned bridge with the bridge-keeper's house, a ruined tower in the background, and Tennyson's Queen Mary, a Drama (London, 1875) with a FORE-EDGE PAINTING of a view of Loch Leven Castle.
