LOMONOSOFF, Mikhail Vasil'evich (1711-1765). Polnoe Sobranie Sochineniy. Saint Petersburg: Academy Press, 1784-87. 6 volumes in 2, 4° (248 x 200mm). Engraved portrait, 20 folding plates, headpieces (portrait shaved at lower edge, title of vol. one soiled and with 3 holes, a few other leaves in the same vol. flawed with some loss of text, occasional browning). Contemporary half calf, red label on spines (rather worn). Provenance: William Brown (19th-century signature on title-versos).
FIRST EDITION of the works of Lomonosov, a poet and scientist from a poor family near Archangel who studied metallurgy for a while in Germany. 'On his [return to] Russia he rapidly rose to distinction, and was made professor of chemistry in the University of St Petersburg. He ultimately became rector, and in 1764 secretary of state...The most valuable of the works of Lomonósov are those relating to physical science, and he wrote upon many branches of it ... He compiled a Russian grammar, which long enjoyed popularity, and did much to improve the rhythm of Russian verse', Encyclopaedia Britannica. (2)
