[RIGBY, Edward]. An Account of Mr. James Deeker's Two Aerial Expeditions from the City of Norwich. Norwich: John Crouse, 1785. 8°. Engraved frontispiece (a little offset onto title, a little general spotting). Modern brown morocco gilt. FIRST EDITION of a rare account of two aerial voyages made by James Deeker, an ingenious mechanic who, when not ballooning himself, sold small experimental balloons from his premises at 59 Berwick Street, Soho. They are the subject of two articles written by Edward Rigby for the Norfolk Chronicle and the Norwich Mercury. The first flight took place at Norwich on 1 June 1785. Deeker was supposed to be accompanied by a fourteen year old girl; but owing to a severe storm he went up by himself and only descended with difficulty. The second attempt, also at Norwich, occurred three weeks later and Deeker managed a flight of forty-five minutes landing at Topcroft, twelve miles away.
