EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY COOKERY BOOK. Manuscript of recipes, dated 1784, the majority written in a neat copperplate hand, 20 pages, quarto (210 x 160mm). Stitched paper covers (detached, ring stains, worn). Provenance: cover bears the signature 'Diana Briscoe, 1784', also 'Mrs Calcott' (?); final four pages signed 'This book belongs to Mary Stone'.
Recipes include 'Lady Wrotchley's Lite Pudding', 'Nun's Cake', 'Rice Flummery', 'Calves Head Hash', 'Birch Wine' and 'Old Woman's Stuf', with tips on pickling and preserving. Also includes 'Lady Stamford's Salt of Wormwood Draught' and other home remedies.
