JOHN INGRAM (1767-1841), traveller in Italy and collector.
A collection of correspondence addressed to John Ingram (the majority directed to him in Rome), together with related manuscripts, relating in particular to the Renaissance artists of Ferrara including: a series of letters from Girolamo NEGRINI, relating the lives of various Italian artists, and various letters 2vo, 1833-1834; from GIOVANNI PAGLIARINI, Ferrara, 15 January 1834, one page, 4to; from Filippo PAPINI, Rimini, 7 April 1834, one page, 8vo; manuscript on vellum dated 1557, 4to, 17 pages, 2 contracts signed by notaries; with a collection of correspondence and manuscripts relating to his son-in-law JOHN GODFREY including a letter admitting him as a member of the Traveller's Club, 49 Pall Mall, June 7th, 1822 and items relating to the Accademia Tiberina [with] 2 proofs for portrait engraving; plans of temples at Agrigento; copy of diary of travels in Italy, Syria; copies of a Mr Barker's correspondence relating to his travels in Damascus, Thebes; Sonetti ed orazione in lode delle nobili arti del disegno, pittura (Rome: Kmoarek, 1764, 8°); Morelli, Notizia d'opere di disegno (Bassano: n.p, 1800, 8°).
Born at Staindrop Hall in Durham in 1767, Ingram 'was far from being a conventional Grand Tourist' (loc. cit). He is recorded as being in Venice in 1819, when he moved some of his paintings from the city, and in Rome three years later, where he is said to have lived in the Palazzo Mignanelli. He is thought to have commissioned paintings from Francesco Guardi. John Godfrey was married to Ingram's daughter Augusta, who herself studied under the venetian engraver Francesco Novelli.
