A group of letters which reveals much about the actors Charles and Edmund Kean. Written just before Edmund Kean's historic success at Drury Lane in 1814, his wife's desperate tear-stained letters detail her 'sufferings' and 'misery' at being left penniless by her husband, 'a disgrace to human nature', although 'possessed of every talent requisite for his profession'. Her grieving letter to her sister follows the death of her son, and talks of prospects of success for Edmund at Drury Lane.

Charles Kean turned to the stage at the age of sixteen, following a rift with his father. He rose to fame in American and Europe and was highly esteemed in London and Dublin. His letter here concerns the question of his father's doubtful parenthood, 'he was "himself alone" & the founder of his own fame. As Napoleon dated from Montenotte, so did Edmund Kean from his first appearance at Drury Lane in Shylock'. (13)
