[On the Progress of Engineering in the United States of North America, regarding some contrivances in the Army and Navy], Milan, January 1845, title and 135 pages, folio (395 x 240mm), in 8 parts, written in brown ink in a neat bookhand, with 12 large folding plates in ink and watercolour (short tear to first plate, minor hole to plate 9, a few leaves slightly creased), 19th-century brown cloth.

The manuscript, with its meticulously drawn diagrams is apparently a transcript of the original manuscript of Major Moering's Armee und Flotte der Vereins-Staaten, which was later printed in Vienna in 1848. Dedicated to the Archduke Ludwig of Austria, the work details new inventions such as a machine for cutting the stocks of guns at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, the ballistic pendulum in the Arsenal of Washington, marine paint and the latest steam warships of the United States. Carl Moering was in the Corps of Engineers.
