An album of correspondence relating to the Twining family, addressed to Thomas Twining at the Golden Lyon on Devereux Court by Temple Bar, Richard Twining at Twickenham, Michael Twining at Deveraux Court and Richard Twining (1807-1906), the editor of the family's correspondence. The album includes, among various letters to the family, material relating to the East India Company (Richard Twining was a director) and the Royal Westminster Volunteers; calling cards, including those of Mr Garrick and Mr Kemble; a bill from Galignani, teacher of Italian; a bill advertising a performance at the theatre in Colchester of "Such Things Are" for the benefit of The Charity Schools, 1787.

'The gentlemen who will send you this note is returning to Lausanne and has most kindly undertaken to bring with him some tea from London for me. Could you know the stuff we drink here called tea you would not wonder at my troubling my friend. Will you have the goodness to direct to be packed up 12lb of the best Bohea in 2 parcels of 6lb each and 2lb of good green tea' (a letter from P. Kemble, Lausanne, 3 June, 1822 to Michael Twining at Devereux Court, 2 pages, 8vo).

Twinings began their business in Toms Coffee House in Devereux Court, but they shortly abandoned the coffee trade to concentrate on dry tea sales, for which they are still famous today. The sign of the Golden Lyon sat over the door of their shop and became the company's emblem.
