It is very rare to find a vase with such shape and large size. Few examples, either with different size or slightly different shape or glaze, are published ; a vase of similar size and shape but with a Ge-type glaze and tubular handles is illustrated by Qian Zhengzong, Qingdai ciqi shangjian, Hong Kong 1994, p. 145, no. 182 ; another vase of similar size and shape but with a fine relief decorated celadon-glaze was sold at Sotheby's London, 20 June 2001, lot 30.
The glaze of this Qianlong vase is a fine copy of early wares.
During the Qianlong reign, Song stonewares, particularly the crackled wares of Ge, Guan and Ru types were very highly regarded by the Emperor. Another archaistic aspect of this vessel is based upon a metalwork shape, evidenced by the sharp junction between the shoulder and body of the vessel. The current vase, while having a shape that refers to ancient bronze forms, is undecorated so as not to detract from its beautiful glaze based on Song dynasty wares.
