Lot Essay

A Canton enamel bowl with the same Qianlong mark and same pattern is illustrated in Chinese Painted Enamels of the 18th Century, The Chinese Porcelain Company, Exhibition, New York, October 1993, pl.12.
This type of floral pattern comes from earlier porcelain or enamel vessels from the Kangxi and Yongzheng periods ; a Kangxi-marked enamel bowl is in the British Museum, illustrated by Jourdain and Jenyns in Chinese Export Art in the Eighteenth Century, London 1950, pl.109 ; a Yongzheng-marked painted porcelain bowl is included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, vol.1, Taipei 1980, pl.100.
A small box and cover with the same pattern and the Qianlong mark was sold in our New York Rooms, 20 September 2005, lot 122.
