Lot Essay

Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde and his circle painted numerous pictures of the Grote Markt and the Saint Bavo in Haarlem. The viewpoint in the present picture is quite rare; Berckheyde's well-known versions all depict the north side of the church rather than the south side.
