Lot Essay

The present composition follows Bril's drawing in the Louvre (L.W. Ruby, Paul Bril, The Drawings, Turnhout 1999, cat. no. 43, fig. 45). Another version of the composition, attributed to Lodewijk Toeput, il Pozzoserrato, was formerly in a European Private Collection (Sotheby's, Paris, 16 December 2004, lot 11).
