Lot Essay

The inscription is difficult to decipher. The most probable reading is ... q a[l]-qa'im mawlahu (... steadfast, his protector/Lord).

The style of scrolling arabesques and kufic calligraphy is very close to that of a Merinid beam dated to the late 13th century in the Musée des Arts et Traditions, Fez (Maroc, Les Trésors du Royaume, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1999, no.196, p.141).
