THE "LITTLE MAGICIAN" WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. The 78-year old former President stands at the center of this fine group portrait taken in front of the Pavilion Hotel in Sharon Springs, two years before his death. All 46 individuals in the picture have a neat ink number added above or beneath; these are keyed to a carful list of names in lower portion of the mount. The aged 8th President is no. 15. Van Buren went to the Schoharie County spa for its restorative waters, but he was blessed with a hale and hearty constitution throughout his long retirement. He remained very active in Democratic Party affairs and even came close to taking up the party's standard in the 1852 election.
