Engraved title and eight plates, brown pebbled cloth stamped in blind, spine gilt-blocked, front hinge weak, slight wear to spine extremities, a few pencil strokes (by Fillmore?) along margins. In a cloth clamshell case.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. MILLARD FILLMORE'S COPY, signed on printed title page, "Millard Fillmore, 16 November 1858," and also with the notation, "Dec. 4," possibly the date Fillmore finished reading the work. The former President's copy of Holmes's famous compendium of aphorisms ("Sin has many tools, but a lie is a handle which fits them all"), witty vignettes, and light verse, first created for the New England Magazine in 1831 and 1832, then published in book form in 1858, after his distinguished career as physician.
