A VERY RARE IMAGE OF FORMER PRESIDENT GRANT, ON HIS WORLD TOUR

At the end of his two scandal-ridden terms as President, Grant and his family sailed for England on May 17, 1877 for an extensive world tour. Upon landing in Liverpool, the former President and party were welcomed by enormous crowd of well-wishers. In the ensuing months they met and were feted by Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales. The tour took them to Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Jerusalem, Cairo and Alexandria, Greece, Italy, Russia and, in a final leg, Asia, including Burma and Japan, where they were received by Emperor Mutsuhito and Empress Haruko. Grant was reportedly the first person allowed to shake the Emperor's hand. They returned to the U.S. on 16 December 1879.
