[GARFIELD, James A.]. BUNDY, J. M. The Life of Gen. James A. Garfield, Illustrated. New York: A. S. Barnes and Co., 1880. 8o, half morocco marbled boards, spine giltstamped, edges slightly rubbed.
FIRST EDITION of Garfield's campaign biography. A PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED AND INSCRIBED AS PRESIDENT-ELECT on the front flyleaf: "Hon. J. M. Rush, with the kind regards of J. A. Garfield, Mentor O., Dec. 15, 1880." Garfield purchased his home in Mentor, Ohio in 1876, and during his successful 1880 presidential campaign press wags dubbed it "Lawnfield," in honor of Garfield's strategy of staying at home, periodically issuing statements and receiving dignitaries in his front lawn, and generally conveying the dignified air of a candidate above the fray. It worked, and this "front porch" strategy would be copied by other GOP contenders in the Gilded Age.
