Folio, 22 pages, comprising title, Foreword by Roosevelt, General Introduction by Curtis, assorted pages from the edition, and WITH 3 ORIGINAL SEPIA-TONED PHOTOGRAVURE PRINTS AFTER CURTIS'S NEGATIVES: "Navaho Medicine Man" (1904), "Beside the Stream" (1908), "The Oath - Absaroke" (1908), each with tissue guard. Original paper wrappers, uncut, quarter morocco slipcase (wrappers slightly soiled). Laid in are 1) a "Partial List of Subscribers and Owners"; 4pp. press reviews.

BOLDLY SIGNED "THEODORE ROOSEVELT" in ink at the bottom of his Foreword, which is dated 1 October 1906. Roosevelt extols Curtis's work, noting that "The Indian as he has hitherto been is on the point of passing away...Curtis...is rendering a real and great service." An elaborate prospectus for The North American Indian, one of the most expensive publishing projects ever undertaken and one of the most comprehensive ethnographic records of the native tribes of North America. The set was issued from 1907-1930 in 40 volumes and portfolios. THIS PRINTED PROSPECTUS IS VERY RARE.
