GLAD TO BE GONE: A LIGHT-HEARTED EXPRESSION OF HOOVER'S RELIEF ON QUITTING THE CAPITAL. Although not dated, this short quotation most likely dates from Hoover's post-Presidential career: "Herbert Hoover once of Washington D. C. now fortunately elsewhere." Driven from office by the voters in 1932, Hoover left Washington amid the worst economic crisis in the country's history. It was an ironic, even somewhat tragic end to a political career that had opened with such great promise. Hoover's success in feeding refugees in Europe after 1914 made him a revered figure at home and abroad. His dynamism and intelligence as Secretary of Commerce made him an almost automatic choice for President in 1928. Then the great crash turned him into a scapegoat for all that ailed the American economy.
