James Walker (1764-1831) entered the Royal Navy in 1776, serving on the frigate Southampton, in the West Indies. He was then appointed to the Princess Royal, flagship of Sir Peter Parker, by whom on 18 June 1781, he was promoted to be Lieutenant of the Torbay, one of the squadron wich accompanied Sir Samuel (afterwards Viscount) Hood to North America, taking part in the action off the Chesapeake on 5 September, the operations at St. Christopher in January 1782 and in the battle of Dominica on 12 April 1782. In 1794, he served on the Niger at the battle of the Glorious First of June and on 6 July he was promoted to the rank of Commander. Serving on the Monmouth at the battle of Camperdown, he was promoted to Captain shortly afterwards. In 1801, he commanded the 50-gun Isis and was detached under immediate orders of Lord Nelson for the battle of Copenhagen. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1821 and died in 1831.
