Lot Essay

Dolphin, a 217-ton schooner, was built in 1837 for Mr. George Ackers who kept her until 1840 when she was replaced by his larger and more successful Brilliant. Menai was a 175-ton cutter owned, in 1837, by E.N. Harvey, whilst the two cutters astern of the leaders, Crusader - 126 tons, and Rostellan - 60 tons, were owned by Robert Meiklam and T.G. French respectively.

George Holland Ackers, presumably the winner of the match depicted above, devised the so-called Ackers' Graduated Scale, a system of time allowance which brought about significant improvements in the sport after it was introduced into competitive racing in 1843.
