Lot Essay

The first iron ship in the Harrison fleet, Philosopher was built by Thomas Vernon & Sons of Liverpool in 1857. Originally registered at 1,059 tons and measuring 189 feet in length with a 34½ foot beam, she was soon afterwards lengthened to 230 feet and her tonnage increased to 1,330 gross (1,281 net). Intended for the company's India trade, upon which she spent her entire career, she was wrecked at the mouth of the Hoogly on 26th September 1879, three days after leaving Calcutta and homeward bound for Liverpool, when half her crew were lost.
