The large iron full-rigger Helensburgh was built for Thom & Cameron of Glasgow by R. Duncan & Co. at Port Glasgow in 1883. Registered in London at 1,758 tons gross (1,699 net), she measured 265 feet in length with a 40 foot beam and was ordered by her owners for the specific purpose of beating the celebrated racer Clan MacKenzie on the San Francisco run. In fact, Helensburgh failed to achieve this objective but was nevertheless a fast and successful bulk trader who remained with her original owners until sold into Norwegian ownership in 1904 and renamed Marita. In service for a further thirteen years, she was sunk by a German submarine west of St. Kilda on 23rd April 1917 whilst en route from Buenos Aires to Aarhus (Denmark) carrying a cargo of maize.
