Lot Essay

The present pair of candlesticks are based on a pair of silver candlesticks made by William Bateman II in 1834 for Rundell, Bridge and Rundell. Differences may be seen in the bases, which on the Bateman model are of more elaborately rococo form with shell feet. A centre table by George J.Morant, with base similar to the candlesticks, illustrated in The Great Exhibition Catalogue, London, 1851, vol. II, pl.34, p.745, where the design is attributed to the Duchess of Sutherland.
