Lot Essay

A closely related desk, brought from Canton to Salem, Massachusetts, c.1800 by Captain William Cleveland, and later in the Collection of the Essex Institute, is illustrated in Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, The Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 1991. Crossman refers in his text to a second, unprovenanced desk which is carved with oval rosettes, a feature characteristic of furniture made in Canton for the English and American markets.
