Lot Essay

In 1843 Howard Staunton became the international chess hero, after beating the French champion, Pierre de St. Amant. In 1849 the 'Staunton' playing set was first registered and produced by John Jacques, Hatton Garden, and sold at the shop of William Leuchars of Piccadilly.
