These picturesque vignettes of flourishing Chinese riverside landscapes with light-reflecting sky united the early Georgian overmantel mirror and painting. One such pastoral scene of a shepherdess formed part of the Chinese lacquer and porcelain acquired by the banker and East India merchant, Samuel Child (d. 1752) of Osterley Park, Middlesex (J. Hardy and M. Tomlin, Osterley Park House, London, 1985, pp. 52 and 55). A similar scene featured on a mirror in the collection of H. J. Joel, Esq., Childwick Bury, St. Alban's, Hertforshire, sold Christie's house sale, 15 May 1978, lot 57.
