Each with fluted medallion padded back, arms and serpentine seat, the outscrolled arms with patera terminals and beaded supports, above a fluted seat rail, on turned tapering stop-fluted legs and toupie feet, redecorated, four covered in cerise silk, three in pale blue silk, the upholstery on one chair distressed, two chairs with paper label inscribed '4752', two chairs with minor variations (7)

Lot Essay

The elegant 'French cabriolet' chairs, with hollowed Roman-medallion backs, have columnar legs that are antique-fluted and palm-wreathed in the manner of a pattern in Messrs. Gillow of London and Lancaster's 1786 Estimate Sketch Book (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1996, fig. 267).
