Lot Essay

The St. Martin's Lane cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) is credited with the early 1770s design for a related garden seat with antique-fluted herm pilaster legs terminating in hermed stump pedestals (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. II, London, 1978, fig. 375).
