The rectangular and cushion-moulded cornice with later pine-cone finials above a stepped frieze and a pair of glazed doors with quarter-veneered banded doors between cluster columns enclosing a division, each side with three adjustable shelves, the base with a shelf above a frieze centred by a patera issuing anthemia above a pair of panelled doors flanked by reeded panels, enclosing six mahogany-lined drawers on each side, on ebonised feet, restorations to the cornice and lower doors, the back feet replaced

Lot Essay

The design of this bookcase corresponds to a larger bookcase bearing the trade label of Robert Herring & Son, illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 264. Herring & Son were established from 1771-1783 at no. 96 Fleet Street and at no. 109 from 1784-1839.
