Lot Essay

George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808 (pl. 92) featured a related reed-enriched and six-legged 'Sideboard'. A related vine-wreathed rail appears on a sideboard, in the manner of one illustrated in Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl. 24), that was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 20 November 1987, lot 293. Related Grecian-fretted ebony inlay appears on an 'Egyptian-head' sideboard sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 16 November 1989, lot 113.
Crossed thrysus wands, like those on the gallery of the present lot, appear on the gallery of a serving-table in the manner of Thomas Hope, sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 9 June 2005, lot 241.
