Lot Essay

The peacock is the national bird of India whereas the mango is a symbol of fertility based on the new shoot of a date palm. According to Indian folklore, women who could not have children have been known to eat mangoes that had been blessed by sadhus (holy men), after which they miraculously fell pregnant. Originating in Kashmir, the mango motif is most well known for its use on shawls which, on their arrival in Britain in the 1760s, were copied in the Scottish town of Paisley. Subsequently, it became known as the Paisley pattern.
