Henry Weekes was one of the most successful establishment sculptors of the mid 19th century. He won a silver medal for sculpture in 1826 at the Royal Academy and in 1827 he became an assistant to Francis Chantrey, with whom he remained until the latter's death in 1841. Weekes then took over Chantrey's studio and completed his unfinished works. In 1852 he was elected an ARA and a full member of the Royal Academy in 1860; from 1869 until his death he was Professor of Sculpture there.
