Lot Essay

David d'Angers (1788-1856) was one of the greatest sculptors of the Romantic era. An enormously prolific artist, he made nearly 600 portrait busts and 500 portrait medals. In 1811 he won the Prix de Rome and spent the years to 1815 in Italy, part of the time being with Canova.
