A RARE THREE-TIERED KODAIJI-MAKI-E FOOD CONTAINER
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (LATE 16TH CENTURY)
The kuro-nuri ground of the kodaiji-maki-e box decorated in hiramaki-e, nashiji and tsukegaki with flowers of autumn (chrysanthemums and Chinese bellflowers), with dew-drops on grasses, amid scattered mon including kiku, kiri, mokko and shippo, the cover overlaps the top layer of the box and the design is carried on from one to the other, the interior of kuro-nuri, with the second tier divided into three compartments, and the cord-rings, with kikugata bosses, of gilt copper, some old wear and slight damage
