Mochizuki Hanzan (1743 - 1790?), was the principle follower of Ogawa Haritsu or Ritsuo (1663-1747) and styled himself Haritsu II, although he was neither his son nor his pupil. He continued the master's style of inlay in strongly contrasting materials often on a plain wood ground.

A writing box of similar style from the collection of Michael Tomkinson, sold in these Rooms, 17 November 1999, Lot 119, and see Edward Gilbertson and others, A Japanese Collection made by Michael Tomkinson (London, 1898), no. 716.

For an inro by Hanzan with a poppy design see Julia Hutt, Japanese Inro (London, 1997), p. 110, pl. 113.
