A Two-fold Ivory Screen
Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Two large and two small carved panels, each surrounded by peonies, chrysanthemums and other flowers carved with nine young women dancing, around a large bonsai pine tree on a stand, the tree decorated with paper lanterns, the kimono of all the girls and the lantern shades decorated with tomoe mon, the reverse carved in shishiaibori with the attack on Kira Kotsuke no Suke's house by the Loyal League, Oishi Kuranosuke, in the right-hand panel, seated on a camp stool giving orders to the forty-seven Ronin, who attacked Kira's house in the snow, the lower panels carved on the front in low relief with, on the left panel, an adult and a young monkey beside a stream and, on the right, three monkeys teasing crabs, which seek shelter under an upturned lotus leaf, on the reverse on the left, a river with pine trees and a large house beyond and, on the right, an ox-cart loaded with a tree trunk in a hilly landscape with a small house, the mounts of silver, engraved with karakusa
