Château Pétrus--Vintage 1983
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Excellent appearance. Slightly surface corrosion to capsules in lot 490. Both lots with into neck levels
Tasting note: Pétrus 1983: First noted at Frerick's Pétrus extravaganza in 1986: an intense ruby magnum, almost jam-like sweetness and richness though still hard on the palate. Starting to show some maturity in 1990 but, I have to say, my lowest mark of the eight first growths at Penning-Rowsell's "10-year" tasting and dinner in 1993. I thought it was surprisingly lean and tannic even (slightly) preferred the Ausone. Most recently an impressive double-magnum with crisp and agreeable fruit on nose and palate, good texture but very dry finish. Last tasted at Rodenstock's opening dinner, Sept 1995. M.B.
