1996 Vintage Report: Though upstaged by the attractive '95s, this vintage is better than it first made out to be, and improves greatly on acquaintance. Indeed, after looking through my notes, I think it is a seriously underrated vintage. M.B.

Tasting note: Latour 1996: At the Rodenstock tasting of '96 first growths I gave it my second highest mark, two points above the average. Lovely colour; touch of mocha, fragrant; stylish, very good flavour, silky/leathery tannic finish. Last tasted March 2001 **** M.B.
