Lot Essay

Roberts achieved full Royal Academician status in his seventieth year. His pictures of this time explore the impact of visual juxtapositions, in the present work the compositon is comprised of two halves, with the images of the sun-hat, flag and ship being repeated and creating a pattern. A similar view The Seaside, 1966, is in the Arts Council Collection, Hayward Gallery, London.
